Drive Space Indicator helps you stay on top of available disk space by doing the following: it changes the icons you see in Computer (or My Computer) and puts a progress bar under each icon; the progress bar displays how full your drives are. On top of that, Drive Space Indicator can put icons in the system tray, icons that present the same progress bar.

To enjoy the functionality Drive Space Indicator has to offer, you only have to download a 1.5MB executable onto your Windows PC. Once the download completes, run the executable and Drive Space Indicator will launch; you will not have to install anything.

When Drive Space Indicator is running, you will see an icon in the system tray – double click it to bring up the application’s Program Configuration window from which you can pick a favorite language, change the theme, set the update interval, and play with a few other settings.

When Drive Space Indicator launches, you will notice that the icons you see in Computer will change. Say you’re on Windows 7 and you set the view to Large Icons. You will notice that the large icons change and a progress bar appears underneath your drives. From the aforementioned Program Configuration window you can set it so that icons (complete with progress bar) for the drives you choose are displayed in the system tray, alongside the Drive Space Indicator icon.

The downside is that if you set the view to Tiles, Details, or Content, Windows 7 will display a progress bar by default in Computer. If you set the view to Small icons, the Drive Space Indicator progress bar is hardly visible; and the same can be said about the drive icons in the system tray. So the functionality Drive Space Indicator has to offer only comes in handy when you set the view to Medium, Large or Extra Large icons.

The progress bar Drive Space Indicator puts underneath the icons for your drives helps you better manage disk space.

Pros

Drive Space Indicator does not have to be installed (this makes the application portable). Changes the icons for the drives you see in Computer (or My Computer) and puts a progress bar underneath the icons, progress bar that displays how full the drive is. Put icons for your drives in the system tray.

Cons

Similar functionality is provided by Windows 7 by default.
